Here, the activities of an engineer merge with the requirements and tasks of environmental protection. The solutions to scientific questions combine different engineering and scientific disciplines. Economic, social, and urban planning aspects are also increasingly being taken into account.

The Institute Water Infrastructure Resources - WIR - is a thematic merger of the Institutes of Urban Water Management (SiWaWi), Resource Efficient Wastewater Technology (rewa), Resource Recovery from Wastewter (renew), and the Center for Innovative Wastewater Technologies (tectraa) of the RPTU Kaiserslautern Landau e.V..
